The PARK HOPPER scavenger hunt is a little over 2 miles long and takes approximately 1.5 hours to finish when directly walking from one target to the next. The actual time it takes, and the actual distance traveled for your team will vary depending on how much you have to search for the targets and the pace you travel.
This is a digital scavenger hunt. You will not have to collect any physical objects. Instead, you will have to answer challenge questions. Information to help answer the challenge questions will be provided by physical objects (targets). There is a total of 27 physical targets to find and a total of 135 points you can accumulate for a perfect score. You will receive 1 point for each target discovered and 4 additional points for each correct answer you provide for the challenge questions. If you answer incorrectly, you will not receive the additional 4 points. Please make sure to double-check your answers for spelling before submission because you only have one submission opportunity per challenge question.
There is also a hint attached to each challenge question. If you decide to use a hint, a penalty of 2 minutes will be added to your completion time. It is up to your team if you use and/or need the hint for a challenge question. Most teams try to complete the entire hunt without using a hint. Scoring is based upon time and points accumulated. You may play the game at a leisurely pace just to have fun and exercise, or you may play the game competitively to see how well you score compared to other teams that have played. The choice is yours.
Only one person on your team will need to have the app on their device for game play. This will provide the map showing the targets and also the challenge questions. This device must be (IOS 8.1 or higher) or (Android 4.3 or higher). The device should also be fully charged due to the use of GPS services. You must have LOCATION/GPS and the media VOLUME turned on.
1) Download the TurfHunt app to your device from Google Play or App Store.
2) Open the app and tap “Redeem Invitation”.
3) Enter the game code you were given and tap “Redeem”.
4) You may download the entire game on your device before arriving at the start location. This will allow you to play without using mobile data. Tap "Join Game" and the tap "Upgrade/Download/Install" if asked to do so. This will download the 11MB game file to your device. You will be able to delete this file after playing. You are not required to download the game if you want to use mobile data while playing.
5) When you are at the indicated start location and ready to play, tap “Join Game”.
6) When asked for your player name, enter your TEAM name.
7) Proceed to the map pin marker to locate your first target. You should try to get as close to the point of the pin on the map, instead of the round pin head. You can tap on the black map pin to reveal the title of the target. Some of the titles may provide clues. When you arrive within close proximity of the map pin location, listen for the alert tone indicating that the challenge question has been activated. Tap on the "CHALLENGE QUESTION" button to read the question. After answering the question, tap "Continue" to reveal the next target location.
For easier location orientation, we highly recommend rotating your map 180 degrees so that Eckhart Park is at the bottom of your screen and the Viroqua Park Bowl Complex is at the top. If you want a more precise satellite photo view of the area, tap on the map icon at the bottom right of your screen. Satellite view may require your mobile data to be turned on for some devices.
Target map pins will lead you to the general area of the target. The actual target may be up to 100 feet in any direction after the challenge question appears. You will have to hunt for the information you need to answer the challenge question. Please note that due to tree foliage, some GPS position markers showing your current location may lag slightly on some devices as you are walking. This simply means you may have to walk around or past the map pin to activate the challenge question. The map pins have been placed in relatively open spaces that receive a strong GPS signal. We have tested these locations numerous times with perfect results.
